Just a short, scenic drive from Kotor lies Perast, arguably the most beautiful and architecturally preserved town in the entire Boka Kotorska Bay. Quiet, elegant, and steeped in maritime glory, Perast feels like an open-air museum where time stood still during the golden age of the Venetian Republic.
With its grand stone palaces, soaring bell towers, and two postcard-perfect islands floating just off its shores, Perast is a mandatory stop for anyone seeking the romantic heart of Montenegro.
Though today it is a peaceful haven with around 300 permanent residents, Perast was once a mighty naval powerhouse. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the town was home to wealthy sea captains, international traders, and a world-renowned naval academy where even the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great, sent his sailors to be educated.
This immense wealth resulted in the construction of 16 Baroque palaces, 19 churches, and 9 defensive towers. Walking along the car-free waterfront promenade, you will be surrounded by the elegant, sun-bleached stone facades that tell stories of historic battles, epic voyages, and noble Venetian families.
The crown jewel of Perast is Our Lady of the Rocks, a magnificent man-made islet located directly opposite the town. According to legend, local fishermen found an icon of the Virgin Mary on a sea rock here in 1452. For centuries, sailors dropped rocks and sank seized ships on that exact spot, creating a stunning artificial island. Today, you can take a 5-minute boat ride to visit the historic 17th-century Catholic church and a museum packed with precious silver votive gifts and maritime artifacts.
Right next to Our Lady of the Rocks sits the natural island of St. George. Shrouded in tall cypress trees, it houses a 12th-century Benedictine monastery and an old graveyard for Perast’s nobility. Unlike its neighbor, St. George is a private island and closed to the public, but it makes for a hauntingly beautiful view from the shore or a passing boat.
Dominating Perast’s skyline is the Church of St. Nicholas, featuring a magnificent 55-meter-high bell tower built in 1691. For a small fee, you can climb the narrow stone steps to the very top. The reward is the single best panoramic view in the region—looking out across the red-tiled roofs of Perast, the two islands, and the dramatic cliffs where the bay narrows.
Car-Free Summer Experience: To preserve its tranquil atmosphere, Perast is closed to regular car traffic during the peak summer months. Visitors can park at large designated parking lots at either entrance of the town and walk in, or hop on cheap, eco-friendly electric golf carts.
Waterfront Dining: Perast is famous for its romantic seaside restaurants. Grab an outdoor table at a local konoba to enjoy freshly caught sea bream, octopus salad, and a glass of local white wine right at the water’s edge.
The Best Sunset: Because of its unique position facing the narrowest stretch of the bay (Verige Strait), Perast experiences some of the most golden, photogenic sunsets in Montenegro.
Perast can easily be visited as a day trip from Kotor by taxi, local bus, or—best of all—by boat.
